What is SOPHROLOGY?
Sophrology is an effective stress management and wellbeing tool and a mind-body healing method, both a therapy and a meditative process, that can help to alleviate issues such as anxiety, insomnia and depression, and increase your overall sense of well-being. It is the stress solution that for many people is an easy and effective method to incorporate into their lives.
It is a wonderful blend of both Eastern and Western relaxation, yogic mindfulness and meditation practices, and philosophies. It combines gentle movement, breathing exercises, visualisation, stretches, sound and relaxation techniques to harmonise both body and mind. It is easy to learn and you can begin to experience benefits almost immediately.
At the heart of sophrology is the opportunity to get to know ourselves much better, and it offers a path of deepening our self-knowledge and a way to come into that place of simply being, much like with yoga and meditation. Sophrology uses three key principles:
* Body Awareness
* Positive Action
* Objective Reality (non-judgement)
Live in Balance
Sophrology gives you some of the tools needed to help you regain your BALANCE, ENERGY and manage your stressors in a much more POSITIVE and RESILIENT way.
The exercises are simple to do and I help guide you with the right ones for you, and the right pace for you so that you begin to reconnect with your body and have much more of an appreciation of how your mind effects your body.
They are simple to learn and to adopt into your everyday life.
Let yourself be gently guided back into a state of balance using Sophrology
Manage your stress
Sophrology is used to help to prepare for what might be a stressful event; such as an exam, interview, assessment centre, public speaking, a sports competition, a wedding or divorce or pregnancy and labour for example.
Enhance your potential
Sophrology is also used by many people as a form of self-development helping to empower the individual to meet their highest potential in the moment, increasing levels of confidence, self-esteem and positivity.
It can be used to help you develop your potential in any area of your life, so that you can feel confident in using all your strengths and capacities.
How can I access Sophrology?
The practise is learnt in a group setting or a one-to-one session and then developed by practising at home, in the work place and in all other areas of your life, learning the best techniques suited to you. It doesn’t require a lot of time and can be easily fitted into home and work life, to create enhanced balance between the two.
How can Sophrology benefit me?
Everyone’s journey is different and yet the benefits of Sophrology can be seen in the first session for most people. Is Sophrology suitable for children?
Yes, children can be taught Sophrology from an early age. Sophrology is highly effective in building levels of self-esteem for children in primary schools. It is also effective at helping students in secondary schools and higher education to prepare for exams, handle stress better, build their ability to focus, improve motivation levels, and strengthen confidence and self-esteem. Sophrology is much more than mindfulness and is often touted as ‘Mindfulness Plus.’
What Sophrology is NOT:
Sophrology is not a replacement for medical treatment and you should not discontinue any prescribed medication without approval from your GP.
It does require practise on the individual’s part to start to see positive changes, and so requires commitment.
Although benefits can usually be felt and seen very quickly, there is no guarantee, as everyone is different and has different motivation levels.
Why haven't I heard about Sophrology before?
Although Sophrology has been well established in Europe for the last 60 years; in France, Spain, Switzerland and Belgium in particular, it is still relatively new to the UK. It is steadily growing in popularity here and has often been called in the press ‘the new mindfulness,’ and indeed it uses mindfulness extensively.
"Sophrology has helped me enormously through through a really difficult time in my life. I feel so much more confident and positive about my future, and I now have the tools to handle whatever life throws at me."

Mindfulness is the tried-and-tested tool of our times for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, addiction and more, but what if it’s not your thing? For those too twitchy to sit still and focus on breathing, Sophrology is the dynamic mindfulness alternative, popular on the continent. The French rugby team and media-magnate-turned-wellbeing-guru Arianna Huffington swear by this method”
"A form of moving meditation or “Dynamic Relaxation”. It’s so popular in France and Switzerland that it’s offered to children in schools and is even part of the training for the Geneva police force. Now it’s about to hit the UK."
“Sophrology - the calming wellbeing we all need now. A form of "Dynamic Meditation" Sophrology brings a sense of relief in the midst of the pandemic"
